Once you register a domain with Bergehost it is active straight away, usually for 1 year. If you don't renew before it expires, it enters a grace period (typically 40 days): your website and email may stop working, but you can still renew, sometimes with a late fee. After the grace period the domain enters redemption (about 30 days): it has been removed from the registry but can still be recovered for a redemption fee (often from about USD 75, it varies) plus the renewal fee. If it is not recovered, it moves to Pending Delete (about 5 days) and can no longer be renewed. After that it is deleted and anyone can register it, including competitors and domain resellers.
